Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They are easily bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners don't interact with them enough. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and can even bite. It is important to have clear boundaries set to ensure that the macaw does feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds that are fond of playing, climbing and play. They require at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful companions for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud cries, which can be annoying to those living in apartments or condos.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Due to this, the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once the sex of the birds is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

It is not an easy process, and it's essential that the pet's owner has patience and understands that this isn't an undertaking to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can to speed up the process and can help to correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could live the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her departure from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

A golden and blue macaw is a delightful companion that is also intelligent. They are well-known for their ability to learn new tricks and phrases quickly. This bird is a fantastic choice for people who are just beginning their journey into avian friendship.
In addition, this bird requires lots of interaction and bonds with her human family members quickly. The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health and condition but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas who was a trainer or was in charge of the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats about 115 pounds of salmon, herring, capelin, and squid per day.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita, has been criticised for the quality of the food they provide to killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was taken from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is threatened and is in a tank that many believe is too small.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare organizations who would like to see her released back to the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction for a long time. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a fragile state.
The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging quickly and that her health is declining.
Since her captor does not have to disclose this information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
